Kaikoura, Ohau Point Waterfall track

The restoration of the Ohau Point Waterfall Track is a deeply personal project. As the Field Site Lead and a member of the beneficial whānau of the Māori land owners, my role is to bridge the gap between technical restoration and Kaitiakitanga (Looking after the land).

Ohau Point Waterfall Track: Restoration & Re-opening

Location: Kaikōura

Role: Site Lead & Beneficial Whānau Member

Our Vision for the Re-opening:

Safety & Stability: Following the 2016 seismic shifts, we are working alongside geotechnical experts to ensure the whenua is stable and the track is safe for the public to return.

Protecting our Taonga: Ohau Point is a beautiful spot for kekeno (NZ fur seals). Every stage of our rebuild is scheduled and designed to respect their breeding cycles, ensuring the seals remain undisturbed in their natural habitat.

Cultural Integrity: This project is about more than a path; it’s about mana. We are building resilient, low-impact infrastructure that honors the land and our connection to it as owners.

Status: In Planning & Assessment (Targeting a safe, sustainable re-opening).

Kaikōura Enquiries: Ohau Point Project & Land Management, Antz Manning

Kaitiakitanga

It has been 10 years since the track has not been opened to the public. Yet, the NZ fur seals continue to use the waterfall as a playground and safe spot.
