It is estimated that 25 million- 50 million of our birds in New Zealand become hunted and killed every year.

Our native kiwi bird is declining in numbers as the population decreases every year. Roughly 5% of kiwi birds have a survival rate by becoming an adult.

In New Zealand, invasive species and predators pose significant threats to the survival of our native plants and animals. For instance, possums consume the leaves and seeds of trees, while stoats and cats prey on lizards and insects. Addressing these challenges is crucial for the preservation of unique ecosystems and biodiversity.

Pests like rabbits, deer, goat, pigs and possums compete with livestock for valuable pasture. They can cause damage to the soil. This ultimately impacts crop production. Their presence poses significant challenge to agricultural success and sustainability. It’s essential to tackle these issues effectively. This will help protect our farming practices. It will also guarantee a healthy environment for both livestock and crops.

Pests can pose a significant biosecurity threat. Their presence can lead to the introduction and spread of diseases that impact both agriculture and native ecosystems. It is crucial to implement effective pest management strategies to safeguard our biosecurity and protect our environment.

Pest control plays a vital role in protecting water quality, natural assets, and ecosystems. By managing invasive species, we can preserve the health of our waterways and guarantee the sustainability of our environment. Effective pest management contributes to the overall well-being of our ecosystems and the communities that rely on them.

Climate change can lead to more pests in areas where they were once found. It also causes a rise in their populations. This shift poses significant challenges for ecosystems and biodiversity. It’s essential to tackle these changes proactively to mitigate their impact on our environment and protect our native species.

On Stewart Island, I had the incredible opportunity to see the 25,000 Tokoeka brown kiwi that inhabit the island. Each sighting inspired me to take action. I committed to more pest control work to protect these amazing birds. Their presence reinforced my dedication to conservation and the importance of safeguarding our native wildlife.

My vision is to create the first pest-free city in the country by collaborating with competitors. We view each other as conservationists rather than rivals. This industry is driven by a shared passion for protecting our ecosystem. I believe we can achieve this goal with a small yet manageable population in Whanganui. Together, we can make a significant achievement on our environment!

Being Ngai Tahu, I bring unique iwi skills and a commitment to uplifting our community’s well-being through environmental stewardship.

Every step we take in our Ngahere, nourishes our spirit. As the community engages with observing what is on top of our trap box, they will remember the value. Deepening their understanding of our environment enriches their well-being. It strengthens their bond with the land and cultivates a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
